Owned by Haggen Inc is the TOP FOOD & DRUG chain of stores from the U.S. state of Washington. With 30 stores in the state the Haggen / Top combination make them among the Top 75 food retailers in the U.S. and one of the largest privately owned companies in Washington. Finland's TRADEKA cooperative is one of the largest retailers in the region with over 760 stores operating under the Siwa, Euromarket and Valintatalo banner names. A growing retail chain in Romania is TRIDENT who currently operate large hypermarkets which as you can see from the photos bring in a lot of customers. ( Photos courtesy of the Trident website )

In 2006 the TRUST-MART chain with around 100 stores in 20 provinces of mainland China was acquired by Wal-mart for around $ 1 Billion after being successful in a bidding war that pitted them against, Tesco from the U.K and China's own Lianhua to name just a couple. Located exclusively in the U.S. state of Texas is the UNITED SUPERMARKETS company that operates close to 50 stores in 28 cities throughout the state under the United Supermarkets, Amigos and Market Street banners. The company was founded in 1916 by H.D. Snell and ownership has remained with the Snell family since it's inception. ( Photos courtesy of the United Texas website )

One of Russia's emerging food retail leaders is the VICTORIA GROUP who have been in business since 1993 and have over 150 stores in the Moscow, Saint-Petersburg and Kaliningrad regions. Their company operates on the standard supermarket, convenience, discount and cash & carry formats. ( Photos courtesy of the Victoria website )

Not too much can be said about WAL-MART that hasn't been said already with respect to their operations around the world. These photos courtesy of the Wal-mart website show a selection of many of their international businesses including those from Canada, Central America, Japan , the U.K. and more.

Part of the Edeka Group of Germany is WASGAU who operate over 100 stores in the southern region of the country in the Edeka and Wasgau names. ( Photos thanks to Frank Grueber of Wasgau who helped guide me to them through the all German website )

One of the most recognized names in the supermarket business representing quality is the privately owned WEGMANS chain headquartered in Rochester in the U.S. state of New York. The largest natural food retailer in the world is WHOLE FOODS based in Austin, Texas in the U.S. Their operation of over 270 stores covers more than 30 U.S. states, Canada and the U.K. Proof the what many used to think was a fad or " niche " is a viable market with great growth potential...when done right. A name well known in the food retail industry is WINN-DIXIE from the southeastern U.S. Though they struggled through Chapter 11 and divestures, they emerged as strong as ever and currently operate over 520 stores in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia and Mississippi ( Photos from the internet and may no longer exist given past closures and divestures )

A favourite company of mine to watch is WOOLWORTHS LIMITED who have been in business for over 80 years with operations in both Australia and New Zealand under the Woolworths, Safeway, Big W names and more. Their corporste website is one of the best I've seen but unfortunately they do not offer much by way of photos of their operations apart from what you see below. Another large retail consortium from Russia is the X5 RETAIL GROUP who is mainly made up of the chains PEREKRESTOK and PYATEROCHKA though their rapid growth also comes from the acquisition of other chains in the country.
