In the eastern regions of the Netherlands you can find the SANDERS SUPERMARKTEN chain who operate 22 stores there. They have been in business since 1955 and have been able to remain competitive with the other larger global retailers in the country. ( Photos courtesy of the Sanders website )

Anyone who has ever followed NASCAR auto racing will have heard of the California based SAVE MART supermarket chain where they have for years been a sponsor of one of the Sprint Cup road course races in that state. Another privately owned company among the top 100 family owned businesses in the U.S. is the SCHNUCKS chain based in St. Louis, Missouri who have over 100 stores in 6 states under the Schnucks and Logli banner names. Also from the Netherlands is the SCHUITEMA/C1000 chain was once majority owned by Ahold who sold off most of their interest to private equity firm CVC Capital Partners early in 2008. SEMPREVALE SUPERMERCADOS currently operates 15 stores in Brazil and are a fairly well recognized name in the food retail industry in the country and continue to expand their line of private label offerings to Brazilian consumers. ( Photos courtesy of the Semprevale website )

One of many unrelated companies using the SHOPRITE name around the world is Shoprite Holdings of South Africa who is one of the regions largest and most successful retailers. They currently own or operate over 1200 stores throughout Africa under a varitey of formats and banner names including Shoprite, Checkers, USave, OK Foods and more. Based in Stellarton, Nova Scotia, Canada is the SOBEYS chain who continue to expand westward across the country through expansion and acquisitions in Ontario and beyond. Owned by the Sobey family Sobeys is no longer a publicly traded company as the business was taken private under the parent Empire Company Limited in the past year. ( Photos from the internet )

The chain SPAR is basically a cooperative of retailers all operating under one name. As a group there are over 13,500 stores in more than 33 countries around the world technically making them the world's largest food retail chain. In the U.S. states of Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio is the chain of 24 SPARKLE MARKET stores that are a group of independent owners banded together under the motto " big enough to serve you ; small enough to care " to meet both the needs of their customers and demands of high competition in the industry. Formerly known as Superior Super Warehouse is the chain SUPERIOR GROCERS from the U.S. state of California who have over 30 stores in the southern part of the state. The SUPERQUINN company from Ireland are an award winning chain in business since 1960. Up to 2005 the company was owned by the Quinn family but are now a subsidiary of consortium Select Retail Holdings. A leading retailer in Paraguay is the SUPERSEIS or Super 6 chain of stores. They currently have 13 locations of what are mainly hypermarkets offering a wide variety of goods and services to their customers. Since their buyout of a number of chains including most of Albertsons, SUPERVALU INC have grown significantly in the U.S. to be one of the Top 30 retailers in the world. Based in the state of Minnesota they now have over 2500 stores under banners like Cub Foods, Albertsons, Shaws, and many more throughout the U.S. ( Photos courtesy of the Supervalu website )

Merged in 2006 with Migros in Turkey is the TANSAS chain that originated as a municipally owned company that has evolved into one of the largest supermarket chains in the country with over 260 stores in 29 cities. In North America it is surprising how few people are aware that the A&P company in the U.S. has for years been owned by the larger German conglomerate TENGELMANN. Outside of the A&P business, their other interests are mainly under the " Plus " name in countries that include Austria, Poland, Romania, Spain and more. U.K. based retailer TESCO is the company that most ( including Wal-mart ) look to for inspiration and ideas. They are one of the most respected companies in the industry and have often been considered the only legitimate threat to Wal-mart's growth. In Argentina are over 30 SUPERMERCADOS TOLEDO stores in six regions of the country. Among the first to bring hypermarkets to Argentina, they have been in business since the 1950's and among other services offer online shopping through their e-Toledo website. ( Photos courtesy of the Toledo website )
