Since the end of the cold war, retailing in Russia has grown in leaps and bounds with both expansion into the country by international companies as well as the introduction and development of their own. Among the leaders established in Moscow in 1997 is the PATERSON chain with over 90 stores in Russia and Ukraine. ( Photos courtesy of the Paterson website )

PCC NATURAL MARKETS from the U.S. state of Washington operates as a cooperative with 8 locations in the Puget Sound region. For being a retailer offering just natural foods, having 40,000 members in the cooperative is definitely impressive. ( Photos courtesy of the PCC website )

Unfortunately these are the only two photos I have been able to find showing Romania's PIC GROUP operations. Not only do they operate their own chain of hypermarkets, as a distributor their products are also found in competitors stores. These competitors include Carrefour, Metro and more. Among their non retai holdings is a taxi company that has over 600 cars. ( Photos courtesy of the PIC website )

Another growing retailer is Bulgaria's chain PICCADILLY who presently operate 12 stores in that country with plans to expand within the region. Fortunately their website is available in English as well as Bulgarian. ( Photos courtesy of the Piccadilly website )

One of the most well known names in U.S. retail is the Piggly Wiggly chain of stores. No longer one individual company the chain is made up of separate companies, individual franchisee's and groups of franchisee's. For a listing of many of the different Piggly websites, visit my links pages. ( Photos courtesy of Piggly Wiggly websites )

The group of PIGGLY WIGGLY stores shown below are part of the Piggly Wiggly Carolina Company who have a number of locations in both U.S. states of South Carolina and Georgia. ( Photos courtesy of Rita Postell / Jimmy Miller from Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co. )

With a name of PINGUINO or in English, penguin you would think the chain in Argentina would have a nautical theme to their stores which isnt't the case from everything I have seen. Great name though just the same. ( Photos courtesy of the Pinguino website )

From Spain is the PLUSFRESC group who operate 69 stores under the Plusfresc name with the exception of one store named Sunka. Unfortunately I haven't been able to determine why there is one store out. The all Spanish website does not translate well, possibly a local dialect on the site ? ( Photos courtesy of the Plusfresc website )

Located in Romania is the PRIMAVARA chain of stores. To date they have 9 existing locatations in 5 regions of the country. Where their site is all in Romanian I wasn't able to find out too much information on their business. ( Photos courtesy of the Primavara website )

Large American chain PUBLIX operates close to 950 stores in the southern U.S. states of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee with the majority of stores being in Florida. They employee over 140,000 and are among the leading retailers in the U.S. and among the Top 40 globally. ( Photos courtesy of the Publix website )

From the province of British Columbia in Canada is the QUALITY FOODS group of stores located in the Vancouver Island region. They have won awards for being one of Canada's best managed companies and have been in business for over 25 years. ( Photos courtesy of Rob MacKay from Quality Foods )

Owned by MIGROS of Turkey is the Ramstore chain of stores with locations in Russia, Bulgaria, Macedonia and more. Among these photos are some of my personal favourites. The images from the Russian stores with the neon lighting create an impressive " look ". ( Photos courtesy of various Ramstore websites )

Even though there are only two RATNADEEP stores in India I thought I would include them here where that country along with China are emerging as the focus countries for retailer growth. I would anticipate more locations in their future too. ( Photos courtesy of the Ratnadeep website )

Another global leader is REWE GROUP based in Germany with operations in over 15 countries among a variety of banner names. Among them is what used to be the Delhaize owned Delvita business in the Czech Republic now under the Billa name. ( Photos courtesy of the Rewe Group website )

One of the most well known South American chains is Panama's largest, the SUPERMERCADOS REY ( or Kings Supermarkets ) chain that is part of Rey Holdings who also own the Mr. Preico chain of stores among other businesses. ( Photos courtesy of Roberto Maduro from Rey )

U.K. retailer J SAINSBURY is another well known / well recognized name in food retailing. Not including their other retail convenience store businesses, they have close to 800 locations in the U.K. and continue to grow. ( Photos courtesy of the J Sainsbury website )
