The LUND'S & BYERLY'S chain in the U.S. state of Minnesota is made up of 10 Lund's stores and 11 Byerly's stores. Located in Venezuela is the 5 store LUVEBRAS AUTOMERCADO chain located in or near the capital city of Caracas. With a population of 4.7 million people there I am sure these stores do well despite being a small company. ( Photos courtesy of the Luvebras website )

In Spain the MIQUEL ALIMENTACIO GRUP owns or operates nearly 600 stores under the supermarket banner SUMA SUPERMERCADOS name or the cash & carry formatted GROS MERCAT named stores. ( Photos courtesy of Mario Puntonet Burch from the Miquel Group )

Essentially founded in 1884 is what is now the MARKS & SPENCER chain headquartered in the U.K. that has 600 stores in that country alone with an additional 240 stores in 34 countries with most of them being franchise arangements. Up until 2006 in North America they owned the upscale KINGS SUPER MARKETS chain in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Today they have no established presence here. In the U.S. state of Maryland is the MARS SUPER MARKETS chain of 18 stores. Since being established in 1943 the business has been owned / operated by members of the D'Anna family with most of the family executives having worked their way from the bottom to the top in the organization. Based in Lithuania is the MAXIMA GRUPE's chain of stores in Lithuania, Estonia, Bulgaria and Latvia where with rapid expansion plans they plan to grow from under 500 stores to over 1000 stores in just the next couple of years. ( Photos courtesy of the Maxima websites )


Another Austrian retailer is the MAXI MARKT chain of stores that are a part of the much larger SPAR AUSTRIA group there. Even though Maximarkt has only 7 stores, as you can see they are all large locations offering the " one stop shop " approach to retailing. Many in North America haven't even heard of them but Germany's METRO GROUP is not only in the TOP 5 list of global retailers by sales, they are also at the forefront of retail technology with their investment, research and development of RFID technologies in the retail world as can be seen at their FUTURE STORE INITIATIVE website showing their progress including the robot you see below. From the country of Greece is another METRO that is totally unrelated to Metro of Germany. The chain in Greece operates both the My Market supermarkets and the Metro Cash & Carry banners throughout the country with over 50 locations. ( Photos courtesy of the Metro website )

Located in the U.S. state of Washington is the METROPOLITAN MARKET chain of 6 stores located in Seattle and Tacoma. In business since 1971, their upscale stores have brought them a number of awards and accolades over the years. ( Photos courtesy of the Metropolitan Market website )

Currently in 2008 the Texas based company MINYARDS is undergoing a significant downsizing where over half of their stores and their " CARNIVAL " name (as shown below ) are being sold to THE GROCERS SUPPLY COMPANY . Portugal based MODELO CONTINENTE better known as SONAE DISTRIBUICAO are a constantly evolving business involved in all areas of retail. Though they sold off their assets in Brazil several years ago to Wal-mart it was not a sign of weakness. With 375 stores in the U.K. the MORRISONS chain is Britain's fourth largest retailer. Named for William Morrison their growth increased most significantly in 2004 when they acquired the Safeway chain there. Are these stores from MPREIS of Austria sexy ? According to British magazine " Wallpaper " that is exactly what they are and they have received architecture awards to back it up. Extremely proud of being locally owned in the U.S. state of Oregon is the NEW SEASONS MARKET chain of 12 stores designed to make shopping both easy and fun according to their blurb with wide aisles, clear signage and more.
