Another family owned business in the U.S. is the 13 store chain in the state of Utah named HARMONS who have a very interesting story in their background. In the early incarnation of their business the first store they owned called Market Spot was destroyed by a runaway truck and recovery / re-entry into the supermarket business didn't come until a few years later. Owned by the holding company the RUDDICK CORPORATION is the HARRIS TEETER chain of 168 stores operating in the southeastern U.S. states of Virginia, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia and both North and South Carolina and employs 20,000. ( Photos courtesy of the Harris Teeter website )



In Hong Kong the conglomerate of HUTCHISON WHAMPOA operate their chain of stores under the divisional A.S. WATSON company name. Their most recognized name in the region are the PARKnSHOP stores in Hong Kong and mainland China.



A notable part of the businesses owned by AHOLD from the Netherlands is their HYPERNOVA division active in the Czech Republic and Slovakia as their tool for wider expansion through central Europe. ( Photos courtesy of the Hypernova website )

The chain HY-VEE was created in 1930 in Iowa by Charles Hyde and David Vredenburg that has evolved today to being an employee owned company with over 200 locations in 7 Midwestern U.S. states. ( Photos courtesy of the Hy-vee website )



From Sweden is the company ICA AB who have over 2,300 namesake or associated stores in Scandanavia and the Baltic region. After years as an equal partner in their business, AHOLD from the Netherlands in 2004 increased their ownership in Ica to 60%. ( Photos courtesy of the Ica website )


GROUPE MOUSQUETAIRES from France also known by ITM Enterprises, ITM Develppement International, Intermarche and several other names operates or is associated with around 4,000 stores in France, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia and Spain. ( Photos courtesy of the Groupe Mousquetaires websites )

JERONIMO MARTINS of Portugal is currently still 49% owned by AHOLD of the Netherlands even though an announcement was made in 2006 that they wanted to divest their interest in the company. Operations in Portugal are mainly in the form of their PINGO DOCE chain of over 300 stores. There is only one JUNGLE JIM'S store and it is located in Fairfield, Ohio in the U.S. The 300,000 square foot store is truly one of a kind as you can see from the images. KESKO of Finland is another impressive company involved in many businesses. Their over 1,000 food stores currently are only in Finland giving them a 34% market share there. Other activities such as Home Improvement stores, automobile sales and more make them an international company in business in 7 other countries. I love the look of their stores. What used to be known as La Fragua in Central America was purchased by Wal-mart not to long ago and is now the WAL-MART CENTROAMERICA division. From Germany is the LIDL chain also known as Lidl & Schwarz that not a lot of people have heard of in North America yet Lidl is ranked in the top 10 listing of global retailers with an estimated sales of over $ 50 Billion. Active in 24 countries, to date they have primarily remained on the continent of Europe. ( Photos from the internet )


My employer from 1988 until my employement was severed due to restructuring in 2007 is Canada's largest retailer LOBLAW COMPANIES LIMITED Even from being on the outside now I still maintain that they are headed in the right direction under the leadership of Galen G.
